The drivers licence de-merit system
Every year drivers will be given 12 points. If you have 12 de-merits in a year,
your licence is suspended. After receiving 3 suspensions from the traffic department, your licence WILL be cancelled and you will have to start from scratch again in applying for a licence.
If in a year a driver did not receive any suspensions, the following year, there would be an addition to the last years 12 points plus a bonus points.
Major offences
In the case of major offences though, drivers will still go to court and the traffic laws remain the same.
Fines and de-merits for exceeding the speed limit
No demerit points will be deducted if you are speeding up to 20% over the speed limit but you will be presented with a fine of R250.
1 point will be deducted if you are 21% to 30% over the speed limit and you will get a fine of R500.
2 de-merit points will be deducted if you are 31% to 45% over the speed limit and you will be given a fine of R750.
3 de-merit points will be deducted if you are doing 46% to 60% over the speed limit and you will be fined R1 250.
But if you are doing more than 60% over the speed limit you will automatically have 4 de-merit points deducted – as well as having to GO TO COURT where the fine will be determined.
