Honda, which for many years has driven the hybrid road, may have second thoughts about the question for battery powered electric cars.
In July the company announced plans to launch a plug-in hybrid and pure electric car in 2012, but stopped short of laying out a road map of how they would contribute to its activities.
But chief executive Takanobu Ito told reporters in Tokyo that the market for electric vehicles looked at takeoff.
He added: "we can't keep taking photos of their potential, and we can't say there is no business case for it.
Under former Honda CEO Takeo Fuku remained a strong supporter of hydrogen fuel cars like the best zero emission alternative to the combustion engine because they have a similar driving range of 500-600 km (310-375 miles), is considerably better than battery EVs.
Ito said: "the thing is, not everyone needs to drive 500 km per day."But he would not predict how big the EV market could be, and how quickly it would be.
He said that pure electric cars more sense than plug-in hybrids have the "handicap of having an engine, an engine and a pile of batteries. Why would it not just drive an EV?"
Ito is the result of revealing a new electric car concept at the Los Angeles Auto show on November 17. California has some of the world's most stringent environmental standards, and Honda has said that the battery EVs there would sell only to meet the State's zero emission requirements.
